Two-Bedroom Apartment 71m For A Young Family

Two-Bedroom Apartment 71m For A Young Family

Transformation of a two-room apartment & kitchen into a modern two-bedroom layout for a family with a child.

Renovation and Interior Design Project: Transforming a 71 m² Two-Room & Kitchen Apartment into a Two-Bedroom for a Family With a Child in «Primorsky Quarter», Saint Petersburg

A young family of three approached us with an ambitious goal: to create a full master bedroom and a separate children’s room within a two-room apartment of just 71 m², while preserving the size and functionality of the shared kitchen–dining–living area.

Layout Before Renovation

Analysis of the Original Layout: Key Issues

A detailed analysis of the initial layout revealed several major drawbacks that prevented the creation of a comfortable living environment:

  • Lack of privacy: The living room also served as the parents’ bedroom, leaving them without a private retreat.
  • Insufficient storage: There was no utility room or proper walk-in closet, making everyday organization difficult.
  • Inefficient bathrooms: The separate bathroom and toilet, with no toilet in the main bathroom, required unnecessary trips across the corridor. At the same time, the total bathroom area was oversized and poorly utilized.
  • Narrow passages: A corridor section only 90 cm wide made movement uncomfortable and cramped.
  • Fragmented common area: The family gathered either in the small kitchen or in the living room-bedroom, making it impossible to create a unified multifunctional family hub.
  • Illogical circulation: Poor planning caused constant back-and-forth between the kitchen and living room, with the route passing by the child’s room through a long narrow corridor, disturbing the child’s rest.
  • Lost square meters: The entry hall contained 8.5 m² of unused space, accounting for 12% of the total apartment area — a valuable resource that could be brought back to life.

Layout After Renovation

New Planning Solution: Every Meter Works for Comfort

To meet the family’s needs and maximize every square meter, we developed a new layout, transforming the two-room apartment into a two-bedroom configuration:

  • The family hub — a spacious kitchen-living area: From the former small kitchen, part of the children’s room, and a portion of the corridor, we created a unified 25.3 m² kitchen–dining–living space. The previously unused 2.4 m² of corridor were integrated into the living area, significantly expanding it.
  • Private sleeping wing: A 19.6 m² room was divided diagonally, and the loggias were incorporated to accommodate workspaces. This allowed us to create an 11.4 m² master bedroom and an 8.9 m² children’s room with a dedicated study area.
  • Walk-in wardrobe: To avoid overloading the bedroom with furniture, we designed a spacious 6.5 m² walk-through wardrobe, serving as a buffer between the private and common areas. The entrance to the main bathroom is also located here.
  • Entrance hall: The hallway was optimized to 4.9 m² and now opens onto the bright living room, creating a welcoming first impression.
  • Bathrooms and storage: Near the entrance, we added a compact 1.7 m² guest/children’s bathroom and a multifunctional 3.4 m² storage–wardrobe–laundry room, solving the family’s storage and utility needs.

Result: A New Life for the Apartment

Thanks to the carefully considered redesign, we dramatically improved the apartment’s functionality. Within 71 m², the family gained not just separate rooms, but a well-organized, ergonomic home where every meter serves comfort:

  • Three полноценные rooms: A master bedroom, a children’s room, and a spacious kitchen–dining–living area — impossible in the original layout.
  • Clear zoning: A private wing (bedroom, children’s room, personal wardrobe) and a shared area (kitchen–living room) for family time and guests.
  • Optimized circulation: Corridor “labyrinths” were eliminated, and movement throughout the apartment became logical and quiet.
  • Maximum functionality: Added bathrooms, laundry, storage, and workspaces that were previously lacking.
  • Recovered space: 8.5 m² of unused area were efficiently reintegrated into the apartment’s functional layout.

Interior Design

The interior is designed in a modern functional style with subtle Art Deco elements. The focus is on creating a highly comfortable everyday living environment. The color palette features light pastel beige tones complemented by natural wood textures and soft textiles.
