Climatron
Competition project of a climatron in the Botanical Garden of Rostov-on-Don.
A climatron is a pavilion designed for the localized creation and maintenance of specific climatic conditions.
The project is conceived as a structure integrated into the complex relief of the Temernik River floodplain. Its primary goal is to create a technological “envelope” that supports a stable microclimate for exotic plants, contrasting with the surrounding natural landscape while remaining as open to it as possible.
Form and structure
Mesh envelope: The building is designed as a system of lightweight spatial metal structures (trusses), within which tropical trees and plants grow freely.
Modularity: The structure consists of several volumes of varying heights, allowing the interior to be zoned for different climatic conditions.
Glazing: A maximum glazing area provides natural light for the plants. Inclined supports are visible on the façades, creating a dynamic rhythmic pattern.
Zoning
Climatron: The main exhibition volume with an artificial climate.
Existing building: Integration of the new pavilion with existing administrative or technical facilities.
Bridge: A designed pedestrian bridge connecting the climatron with other parts of the garden across changes in terrain.
Visitor parking: Located in the lower part of the site for visitor convenience.
Riverside recreation area: A landscaped leisure zone along the Temernik River.
Landscape integration and terrain
The project actively uses terracing. The building is placed on a slope designed as a sequence of wide green steps (terraces). This approach addresses two key objectives:
Aesthetic: Creating an amphitheater with views of the river and the pavilion.
Engineering: Reinforcing the slope and organizing pedestrian circulation via ramps and staircases.
A stream runs through the site. Pedestrian bridges and pathways connect the climatron to the main park area.
Technical features and dimensions
Height levels: The main roof of the climatron reaches elevations of +11.130 and +13.780 meters, allowing full-scale tropical trees to be grown inside.
Entrance group: Designed as an expressive parabolic arch (a transparent canopy) that smoothly “emerges” from the ground.
Materials: Steel frame, glass, and concrete terrace foundations.
Architect: Evgeny Igorevich Mironov
