One-Bedroom Apartment Transformation: Renovation and Interior Design Project in “Primorsky Kvartal,” Saint Petersburg — 47 m².

Layout: A former one-room apartment transformed into a one-bedroom layout: an open-plan kitchen–dining–living space + a separate bedroom.

Style: Modern minimalism with a focus on function. Graphite and concrete tones, warm accents of natural wood, clean lines, and refined details.

Client: A young woman.

What We Started With

The original layout had several major flaws:

A small 13.8 m² kitchen, uncomfortable for hosting guests or family gatherings
No private zone: the only room served both as a bedroom and a living room
An oversized 11-meter-long hallway winding from the entrance to the kitchen, with no natural light
A narrow, inefficient corridor forming a bottleneck between the kitchen and the rest of the apartment

What We Created

We reimagined the layout and turned the limitations into assets:

Removed the wall between the hallway and the main room
Converted the “dark corridor” into a kitchen nook within the plumbing zone
Repurposed the original kitchen area into a dedicated private bedroom

Now it’s a complete one-bedroom apartment with logical structure and smooth flow:

20.1 m² kitchen–dining–living area — the heart of the home with clearly defined zones for cooking, dining, and lounging
13.8 m² bedroom — a private space with balcony access and a cozy corner for rest
4.4 m² entryway — compact yet functional, with built-in storage
4.7 m² bathroom — includes a full bathtub and laundry area

Interior Style

The apartment is designed in a contemporary minimalist style with elements of industrial aesthetics. Clean lines, a focus on practicality, and a monochrome palette in shades of gray define the space. The scheme ranges from light gray on the walls and furniture to deep charcoal and near-black tones on cabinet fronts and accent details. White ceilings, curtains, light flooring, and natural wood elements provide warmth and visual contrast.
Textures and materials enrich the neutral palette: smooth matte cabinet fronts, textured slatted panels, and wall finishes that imitate concrete or microcement add depth and tactility.
The layout is organized with maximum efficiency. Built-in floor-to-ceiling wardrobes and custom furniture conceal storage systems, making the interior look more streamlined and spacious. The kitchen is integrated with the living room yet visually separated by a slatted partition.

Lighting Design

Lighting plays a key role in creating a layered and atmospheric interior.

General lighting: Recessed ceiling spotlights provide even, bright illumination. A modern track lighting system allows for flexible adjustment and highlighting specific zones.
Accent lighting: LED strips are integrated under the upper kitchen cabinets to illuminate the work surface. In the bedroom, an LED strip behind the bed creates a soft, diffused glow, visually defining the area.
Decorative lighting: Minimalist pendant lights hang above the dining table. In the hallway and bedroom, sculptural wall sconces function both as light sources and as independent art objects. Integrated mirror lighting in the hallway and bathroom visually expands the space.

The Result

This apartment underwent a full transformation — from an inconvenient one-room layout into a smart, cozy, and character-filled one-bedroom apartment tailored for solo living, a couple, or a young family.

Every square meter is optimized for daily comfort — ideal for rest, work, and welcoming guests.
